RAM question.

What's the difference with registered and non-registered ram? Why the big price difference?

I want to add more ram to a dell server, is there a way of finding out what type of ram it has without opening it up? If it turns out to be registered ram, can I replace them with non-registered ram?

Also, a bit off topic?, does opening the computer and installing new hardware void the warranty?

Adding memory does not void a warranty.

You need to add whatever the server requires - if it uses Registered, that is what you must use. Go to crucial.com and plug in the model number of your server and it'll tell you what you need.

Thanks for the info.

Yup, I'm going to buy it from Crucial. Crucial tells me I can use both type of ram, registered and non registered. So I was wondering if I could just get non-registered ram and get rid of the register ram, if that happens to be the case.

you sure can do that, but make sure you find out what kind of ram you have in there first. i dont know what will happen if you run the two together, but i dont think it will be good.

Yup, I got unlazy and checked. 🙂 It's unregistered ram. Might try to go for the 1GB of ram. 😀
