If I have 2 sticks of the same 512 Ram and inserted them into 2 corresponding slots of the motherboard and got dual channel mode. Can I insert 2 sticks of 256 MB ram into the other 2 slots to have a total of 1.5GB of ram in dual channel mode?

Yes. Although it is preferred that you use the same sized sticks, there is nothing really wrong with that.

Yes, I'm asking if I need to have 4 sticks of identical 512 pieces. So I can have different types as long as the corresponding slots holds the same ram it doesn't matter if the other pair of slots holds different pieces right?

Yes, you can have different types, so long as you keep the same speed throughout. But using two 512mb & two 256mb is fine.

Nice! So I guess that's 1.5GB of dual channel for me. Are all motherboards like that? Are some more picky than the others and won't accept any "tricks"?
