Ram question Only usable with via chipset?

I bought a stick of some genernic RAM a year or two ago for a Athlon system and the site I got it from said it would only work with the irongate or a via northbridge. My question is why is this? Do these chipsets have lax memory timings so they could get away with using some of the rejects from the fabs?

Only that chipset supported the super high density in those memory chips. Most others would either nto find it, or only find 1/2 the value.
