Ram question, 2 gigs in 1 stick?

It has 2 ram slots and handles max ram of 2gb. One of the slots is malfunctioning, so I was thinking about grabbing a 2gb stick of ram for the other slot. I was just wondering if this would work. Is the max level of 2 gigs the total ram, or does it imply a max of 1 gig per slot?

Thanks!
The fact that there is something malfunctioning on the mb leads me to suspect any or all of the mb. For a little more $ than the 2gb stick, you could buy a new mb.
