Hello:

I have a P4 2.66 based on the SiS 648 chipset. My PC comes standard with the PC2100 256MB RAM. I purchased 2 PC2700 512MB modules to set up on the same.

the pc boots up fine when the pc2700 is paired with the pc2100 ... but when the 2 pc2700's are paired with each other the computer does not boot up .. it makes a long beeping sound .. calling the pc company did not help much as they insist that their board supports pc2700 memory .. to be honest i did check up on the sis 648 board and according to official documentation it should support pc2700 ..

I have manually tried to change the speed of the DRAM and that did not help either ..

SO what is the problem .. can anyone please direct me somewhere or give me any suggestions as to what course of action i could take .. i really hope this memory works as pc2700 is better than the pc2100 .. i am not even sure if newegg will let me exchange this memory for another kind (PC2100) or not ..

all help will be really appreciated ..

thanks

What motherboard do you have? Did you try putting the modules in different slots? Try setting your BIOS is set to auto memory speed, then 266mmhz, and then 333mhz to troubleshoot. U say that one PC2700 module works alone. Did you try installing the other PC2700 module alone to make sure that one of them isn't defective?

I have the SiS 648 Motherboard. It is supposed to support PC2700 RAM. I check the same by researching the Motherboard and calling the company that makes the PC I purchased.

Also, I paired the PC2700 Modules individually with the PC2100 module and the computer boots up fine and shows 256 + 512 = 768 MB. But when I try booting individually with just the 512MB PC2700 Modules the computer just beeps. Also, there is no way to change the DRAM speed configuration so that I boot up with 333 as when I put just the 512MB PC2700 modules the computer wont even let me come to the BIOS setting screen.

I am really confused and its been a bad experience for me so far.

Thanks

I think DiabloNY wants to know what model and brand the motherboard is. Sis just makes chips, not entire boards. The SiS 648 is just the chipset of the motherboard.
What brand are the PC2700 memory modules? If you purchased them online, can you post a link to them at the store? I had heard that some of Epox's 8RDA+ motherboards had trouble with Crucial PC2700 (if I'm remembering correctly) - maybe there's a similar problem here.
Also, where did you buy the system? I only see it referred to as "the pc company" - maybe knowing that could help a diagnosis. My uncle had bought a PC from a computer show vendor awhile back - after fighting with it for several weeks, and getting just about every component in the computer replaced (I did most of the diagnostics work; their techs weren't much help. The cache on the motherboard was dead, for one thing.) it finally was working. Not a good experience with that company as you can imagine. They didn't really test the system at all, other than to turn it on and get it to boot off a floppy disk.

hi ..

honestly .. I have no idea about what model the motherboard is .. Medion is the brand of the PC .. and on calling them I was informed that it was a Motherboard "specially" made for Medion and that it supports all memory upto PC2700 ...

I purchased it from tigerdirect.com:

Link to PC

The memory was purchased from newegg.com:

Link to Memory

KINGSTON HyperX Series 184-pin 512MB DDR333 (PC2700) 64X64 DDR RAM modules, Model# KHX2700/512

More details on the memory can be found at:

Memory Details

The techs at Medion have been "nice" but not much help. The last question they asked me was about the CL and CAS values which I emailed them.

Please let me know if there is anything else you need.

Thanks

This is Medion's latest response:

"
We have found that memory with a CL not equal to 2.5 will not work correctly in this PC. The memory that comes with the PC has a CL value of 2.5. We would recommend that you try to find RAM that has this CL value or try to find Samsung memory since Samsung?s memory (as far as we?ve seen) has a CL of 2.5.

Thank you,

Does this make sense to you guys. Should I return the Kingston memory and purchase the Samsung one instead. Do let me know. Also, any suggestions on what Samsung Memory.

Thanks
