hey.. right now i have 256 mb of ram on my system.. over at crucial 256mb cas 3 (what i have now) is on sale for $85, free shipping.. so i was wondering.. do you think i would see any performance gains? i've heard win2k is supposed to be better at taking advantage of extra memory.. so any thoughts? would the extra 256 be useful?

any advice would be appreciated.. thanks

yes it would be useful but the returns to scale are less after 256MB of ram. what that basically means is that its less bang for the buck. still, if you go from 256 to 512 i believe you will notice it.

You may not need this extra memory at all.
Use the Task Manager Performance tab to analyze how much memory is used.
'Commit Charge' section will show you the peak usage for the session. If it's lower than 256MB (what you currently have) and you had a heavy load that day, then there is no need to get extra memory.
The 'Physical Memory' section will show you if Win2K is CURRENTLY using all the available memory or if there is some available.
You can also search the Web for performance monitoring tips.

YoungFart,(as opposed to old fart) has the right idea. Whether or not extra memory will benefit you depends entirely on what you do with your system. Some people cannot justify more than 128MB of RAM, they're few and far between but they are out there. So do a little research a find out for yourself. It wouldn't take much to push me to buy 256MB for $85 in most cases though.
