hi i have a hp pavilion 6630 with p2 500 mhz and 64 mb sdram. i received a stick of 32 mb sdram so i installed it but it doesnt say i have it installed in my slot. i get no errors or anything. someone told me to run mtinst program so i did and it did a lot of test and everything passed. it also might be a dead piece of ram so is there any way of checking that for sure?

Motherboards can be really picky with ram. Make sure the 32mb sdram that you recieved is compatible with your board. If it is try it in different slots. Other than that I am not sure what else you could do.

You will need to order ram from somewhere like www.crucial.com specifying the exact model number of your computer. Some RAM is double sided, single sided, buffered, unbuffered...some systems will only take certain specific configurations. I'm sure what you have is either bad or not compatible.

SDRAM is no longer the current form factor in high production. That makes it so expensive that it's seldom worth spending the money, especially on old, underpowered machines like your HP Pavillion. Also, many older boards that used PC-33 or PC-66 SDRAM cannot recognize newer sticks of PC-100 or PC-133 RAM.

Unfortunately, we're in an age of disposable computers. You'll probably find you'll spend more time and money trying to extend its life than it's worth, compared to investing in an inexpensive new setup. The best value you can get from your machine is as a tax writeoff.

right, but also part of the reason that its more expensive its the fact that requires more copper than ddr/ddr2

no, just because it was free doesnt mean anything, if it wont recognise in your system, it cant be tested by any software program that would be available to you, for example, memtest86...either give it back or find someone who has that old of a system for them to try it in...I deal with alot of older systems with sdram and even 30 pin simmms and 72 pin simms(edo) they are VERY picky about ram, I have several sticks that are known to me to be good, that wont work in all of the systems, I even have a double height stick of sdram that is 4 clock and it works in most sdram setups, but its slower...but like i said earlier, it was free, so it doesnt mean it has to work or that you have to go to the ends of the earth to test it....32mb is not going to make any difference that you will be able to notice in that old of a system.....hell, if you insist on testing it, send it to me and I will send you back a few sticks of that old stuff to try, maybe one or two will work in your system...
