How significant is the ram core's speed for gaming?

Are ddr2 rams with different core speeds (say 800MHz and 1066Mhz) compatible?

Would buying from a brand like Corsair be better than getting the cheaper alternatives?

Would a single 4gb stick be better than two 2gb ones?
