RAM + MOTHERBOARD for Core 2 Duos

What memory and motherboard combination are you planning to purchase if you're going C2D?


I am pre-ordering a 6600, but am still unsure on both memory and motherboard.



The mobo support seems a little bleak at the moment.

A Gigabyte P965 is an excellent, reasonably priced mobo. I suggest using either DDR2 667 or DDR2 800 RAM.

Yeah, the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 seems like a good choice. About $150 at Newegg. I got mine last week and I am very impressed with it. Absolutely trouble free. I'm running 2x1GB Corsair DDR2 800 XMS and a Pentium D 805 to tide me over until my Conroe E6600 comes in.

No overclocking yet because I'm still on the stock HSF and that Pentium D is a hot chip! But as soon I get the bracket to use my Zalman cooler on the board I'll try overclocking the Pentium D to get a feel for the board's capability.

Anyway there's a big discussion right now on Xtremesystems about this board... not sure what the conclusion is though

If you get a P965, wait for the C-2 stepping which is supposed to fix some issues.

As long as you dont have your Core 2 duo coming yet....hold off for revisions to get in the pipes as well as perhaps a few more boards to be announced....No rush getting board without the chip...

seems like from reports at XS mobo are not mature enough yet to meet the OCing needs of these chips..

Also it seems some boards are monsters and others are pure duds with respect to fsb overclocking..so beware

Personally the early adopters are going to need a new mobo if a couple months to likely get the full benefit of the cpus
