what if nvidia made a version of the 7800 that has the same speed as the new top of the line card but a mere 128 megabytes of RAM?

would there still be little difference in performance?

128 MB would absolutely cripple the card. Games like UT2003 can crush 128 MB cards and that games was released in 2002.

-.-;; Are you kidding me? I have a 6600GT with 128mb and I laugh at UT2k4.

At what settings? The bigger maps will texture swap on 128 MB cards if your settings are high enough.

All high with 1600x1200. I turn it down when it comes to using berzerk mutator, but that's about it. Okay, so it doesn't exactly crush it, but it still does fine for me.

What's texture swapping anyway?

Texture swapping is when there isn't enough space in the GPU's local VRAM to store the textures so it has to be stored in the main system memory. Bringing those textures to and from main memory is "swapping".

And at those settings your average will be well below 60 FPS average.

I mean, staying above 30 is... Lagg usually appears under 30 for me.

In my experience a 6600 256 mb agp looks sweet when all the settings are at the max @ painkiller :).
