Ram limits?

My chipset (NF4) supports up to 16gb of ram, but my mobo says it only supports 4gb. Is there some physical aspect of the mobo, like some sort of controller, that limits my max ram? Shouldn't the max ram the chipset allows determine the max amount of ram the board can take? Or is there something I am missing? I dont plan to try and put over 4gb of ram in my board, this is just curiosity.

The BIOS, CPU, and memory controller all need to support >4GB for it to work.

On Athlon64/Opteron CPUs, the memory controller is built into the CPU, and I'm not sure that all the CPUs support >4GB memory.
