RAM Issues

Hey people,

I have 1GB of memory in my system, but lately i've found that almost all of it is always used up. My technical profficiency is rather basic, and as such I don't go around downloading random mods or tweaking my system. Are there steps/programs I can use to free up RAM by removing things I don't need? I've already tweaked start up options but thusfar that's had minimal effects. I do tend to multi-task a bit, but I believe it to be a reasonable amount (firefox, messenger + wow for example)

Thanks for your help!

I upgraded to 1.5gb on my old system and 2gb on the new system I'm building because 1gb is not enough to multitask with wow. I've seem wow use close to 700mb. If you can afford it get at least 512mb more.
If not do the usual things, run spyware scans using Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot S&D, and Lavasoft Adaware. Look in services and disable any you're not using. Defrag the hard drive and make sure you have at least 15% free space on it. If you're running multiple messenger programs get a combined one like Gaim or Trillian.

What are you running when you use it all up? What programs use the most memory?

Your post makes it sound like background programs might be using a lot of it...

I'm currently using 2 sticks of 512, and am hoping to make enough money to build a new system this christmas, as my agp system is dying on me. If possible i'll hope to get 2gb in that. for now i'll try to keep more unused programs closed, thanks!
