RAM issue. 24GB installed (16GB usable)?

I know for a fact when i first put my PC together that the 16GB usable was not in my 'systems' report on microsoft windows 7 ultimate 64bit.

so something has happened along the way to result in this, and i came here to ask if there is something software related or bios that would cause this, before i tinker around on the inside of my case (it is possible that i unseated a stick when doing a video card upgrade).

Any settings i can check before just re-seating RAM, or maybe software that can see if the sticks failed.

Or is it just windows locking down that 8GB for itself?

thanks

This is a very common issue, lots of things can cause it but one of most common is an improperly seated CPU or a HSF that is too tight, try reseating you cpu and make sure you have the timings and voltage for your ram set correctly.

Don't think its a windows problem- its probably the mb not supporting too high of a density of the memory sticks you have which is why only 16Gb is seen in the bios chatter. Or (less probable) you might have mixed up the order of your sticks and 2 of them (assuming 4 slots are filled) might not be recognized by the mb.
