RAM for Older Gigagbyte MoBo

Hola,

So.. I am updating the CPU on my Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P mobo to an AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition Deneb 3.5GHz.

Of course I keep looking at more hardware on the Newegg site and I see all the fancy new (to me) 2x4GB RAM sticks!! For the low, low price of $35!! So.. I want more RAM. But I can't find if they are supported for this board?? Is anyone running the below sticks on this board?

Additionally, can I also run my current RAM with these for 12 GB?

I've been "out of the game" for a little while so I don't know if these are compatible at all..

Thanks for any guidance!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your board uses DDR3 not DDR2 ram.

I have virtually the same board: GA-770TA-UD3 and they both use DDR3. I am also using the Phenom II x4 965 BE.

DDR3 is much cheaper as well and the most compatible ram I have seen is Kingston Value Ram. Obviously not performance ram but it will get the job done.

Hey, thanks man!.. you know what's funny is you replied to a thread I made in 2009 about this same motherboard! I know this because I used the search function - crazy!

Anywho.. thanks for the heads up. I don't see any "DDR2 2x4GB RAM" so I'll assume that is a "DDR3 only" benefit.

What RAM are you using? And can you suggest a RAM upgrade for this board?

edit: I may have gotten my DDR numbers wrong.. hard to tell, I'm inebriated

the first link was to a DDR2 kit.

the second link is to a DDR3 kit; http://detonator.dynamitedata.com/c...com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231193

According to Gigabyte's site, that Gskill kit is compatible with your board.

being buzzed and working on computer equipment is a bad idea. 😉

Yea, I had my links all screwed up in the initial post.. but I'm sober now, and thinking more clearly.

I was considering ordering this RAM:

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231314

But I don't see any 2x4GB setups for my board.. do they just not updated the memory support list?

Regardless though, the heat spreaders would never fit under my cooler:

Sunbeam CR-CCTF 120 mm Core-Contact Freezer CPU Cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835207004

So the easiest and most cost effective solution would be for me to just drop 4GB of the same RAM I have:

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231193

I'm obviously dead set on upgrading my RAM and just wondering if 12GB is overkill? I'm thinking 8GB is even more than enough.

Thanks for listening! Any input is appreciated.
