RAM for an old laptop

My dad want's me to buy ram for an old laptop. It takes 144pin pc 100/133 SD-Ram.
I am looking at 512 MB stick, but prices vary greatly between brands.

I would only use one of two options here.

1) Crucial.com - Memory Adviser tool -- Buy whatever they advise from them, it's guaranteed to be compatible.
2) Cheapo used sticks from eBay - not guaranteed compatible but cheap and likely to work.

Old laptops are sometimes picky about what memory you install, especially models from Dell, HP, Compaq and Toshiba. I personally wouldn't spend $50-75 on memory I wasn't absolutely certain would work.

I second this comment. After you get your memory, run a memory diagnostics on your laptop to make sure the memory is working properly on that machine. If possible, get a guarantee from the seller that the memory is compatible with your particular laptop.
