Ram Drive PCI Card

I was wondering if anyone sells a PCI ram drive card. Something that takes some cheap 1 gig ddr chips. (like 4 or so of them).

All the cards I find are so expensive it crazy. I wasn't thinking something like this would be so complex that it would be that expensive. It would be ok if it wasn't battery backed if it was just effectivly mirroring a portion of hard drive or a partition. I could care less if it takes an hour to initiate the mirror at boot, my system is on all the time anyhow. Its obviously more or less for playing with. Maybe I'm asking too much for too little.

what are you gonna put on a multi gig ramdrive

the ram sticks are gonna be really expensive when you add them up, and ive never seen a card
better to just load up your mobo with ram
and use a coupla sticks from your mobo for a ramdrive

i want to make a ramdrive too, but i cant think of anything other than photoshop scratch disk and internet cache to put on it

there is free software for making a ram drive out of ram on your mobo. just google for ramdrive

but i think there is a way to do through windows xp too
something on registry or something

in my understanding a ram drive is to improve your preformance, right. Well putting it onto a PCI slot would cut it's bus speed down to a max of 133, so what would be the point?

Its just for testing some things out with, I'd like the card to be under 200$ minus the ram of course.

I need the ram drive to be 4GB and no less. additional ram sticks won't allow such size.

Even at max 133 that is far faster than HD transfer rate, not to mention I'd expect to see a boost in "seek time".

**this is for experimental purposes** I just need a large fast access portion of memory. Its not about runing programs faster or anything.

I'm a little confused on what exactly you're going to be doing with this. If you just need a "large fast access portion of memory", why can't you just put 4GB of RAM into your system and create a large RAMdisk (3.5GB or so)? If you need more space than that, a low-end Opteron server can address 8GB of memory using 2GB DIMMs...

Also keep in mind that under Windows, processes cannot access more than 2GB of RAM.
