right now im installing xp onto a vmware station or wutever. so since everything is going to be running of my ram 512 ddr 2100, i figure i should upgrade to some faster ram to make this virtual OS the fastest it can be. what should i do?

No, "more RAM" is more important than "faster RAM" for vmware (or whutever).

You can add another 512 MB of PC3200 but just run it at PC2100 speed, since 1 GB total is much better than just 512 MB of faster RAM.
