RAM...does it matter which order?

I wanted to know if it makes a difference what order you populate RAM slots in.

I have an Intel 850 GB Mobo with 4 Rambus slots (2 pairs)

I have 2 x 256 MB Samsung RIMMS and 2 x 128 Mb Samsung RIMMS

Would there be any performance difference if I put the 2 x 256 Mb RIMMS as the first pair:

My reasoning is that the data written to RAM goes into the first pair of RIMMS first.....so if I use the 2 x 256 Mb RIMMS....then it would take 513 Mb + before the second pair of RIMMS would be used....so cutting out any time it would take to switch over to writing to the second pair.

I don't know if this is correct..or even logical...or even if it makes sense.....

So I'd appreciate if someone could please tell me if my thinking is correct or not.

Thanks in advance! :)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that because of Rambus' serial nature, it's going to take the same amount of time to read from either stick, since adding an additional pair of sticks is going to slow reads/writes no matter what since the data has to then travel through both pairs instead of just one.

So to answer your question I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter.

There would be no difference, as the data has to travel all the way around the entire bus.

Just make sure that you insert your RIMMs in the correct banks/slots as outlined in your motherboard manual.
