RAM decisions and woes...

I have an asus p5n-d mobo w/ an e7200. I'm currently using a cheapo 1gb dimm of crucial 667 overclocked to 915. My frames in css are worse on this computer than my old s939 w/ a 2.6ghz X2, same 7600gt and 2gb of ddr 400 overclocked to 533- I assume it is due to having less ram, and now having vista, which gobbles up what I do have.

I am looking to rma the old ddr w/ crucial. I set it up before, and they offered to give me ~$120 store credit for it. But the rma expired- can I setup another?

I initially was going to get 2x2gb of ddr2-800 crucial ballistix or ballistix tracer. But now I'm not so sure.

Is there a performance gain/loss by going from vista32 to vista 64 to all 4gb? What about in gaming? Are there any major programs/drivers unavailable for 64bit systems?

For vista, is there a performance gain from more than 4gb?

Basically, for $120, what is the highest speed of ram, and highest amount that'd provide an appreciable performance gain?

Any idea what the highest speed of ram my p5n-d can run? It off. supports max of ddr2-800.

Would it be legal or fruitful to post on the fs/ft offering to purchase $120 worth of things off of crucial's store for someone in exchange for money?

The thing is, I feel getting 1066 vs 800 will give me a performance gain, given my processor is running at 3.8-4ghz, and my fsb is set to 1700mhz. But crucial doesn't offer 1066 in 2gb dimm densities, so getting 4gb would fill my slots. That, and there are a lot of other ram offers on newegg for comparable memory @ lower price, higher amounts, higher densities, higher speeds, and lower latencies. I can't afford more than 4gb of 800 from crucial, and don't want to spend the excess money on a handful of flash drives of flash cards.

thoughts?

Dunno about the RMA, ask yellowbeard, the crucial rep at Anandtech.

Vista 64 is good, go get it if you are getting 4GB or more.

Vista sees limited benefits from over 4GB. (using superfetch)

We don't know if your motherboard supports over DDR2-800. It depends on the size of the memory, amount of sticks, quality of motherboard, etc.

I don't recommend more than 2 sticks because that might affect your overclock.

If you can't get another RMA from Crucial or you NEED DDR2-1000+, I would get this RAM:

2x2GB GSkill DDR2-1000 RAM ($70)

Anyway, I'm not sure what you can do with your RMA if you need over DDR2-800.
Maybe you can buy RAM with it and sell the RAM somewhere.

Well, DDR2-800 at stock speed with your processor will yield 3.8GHz (9.5x400) which is right in range for what you have set up now. Virtually any DDR2-800 sticks available should be able to crank out the slight overclock to 421MHz (DDR2-842) with at most a slight bump in voltage or slightly looser timings (to hit the 4.0GHz target).

Just do the RMA & get either 2x2GB DDR2-800 or DDR2-1000 sticks depending on what they have available. Either way you're going to be fine.

Yellowbeard works for Corsair. Great guy, just not the right point of contact for this one.
