Well, I broke down and bought a pair of these guys from NewEgg:
OCZ EL DDR PC-3200 Gold
I hate buying things that won't move to a new computer, but I was waiting on a $100 price point to upgrade my current 2x256MB Kingston HyperX PC3500. My MoBo is a P4P800-DLX, an 865 board (basic HT). I currently run 2.85V at 218FSB on a 1:1 2-2-3-5 (I max out at 228FSB on a 1:1 with these guys now). I'm thinking that I shouldn't worry about trying for the fastest timings and stick with the 1.5GB config, but am I missing anything? It seems that these DIMMS should be a pretty good match for tweaking, which is why I bought them, but the new chips seem like they should be extremely o/c'able. I'm stable at least to 3.6GHz (Prime95) so I figure I'll be o/c'ing a little more seriously as we approach the end of my computer's cycle.
My goal is more stability and smooth operation over speed, though I do enjoy the boost. The main use for my rig is multimedia right now. My system is far better performing at 218FSB than at 200FSB, but this thing cranks out some heat if I start going too high and I worry about my HDDs if I get above 35C case temps. That last parts probably not too helpful, but to more succinctly state the question. Which config would you optimize given these parameters? I know memory tweak is the easiest part of o/c'ing, but all the benchmarks take time when I have such a busy schedule now. Obviously not so busy as I can't post a long and rambling request for help...
