ram compatibility

Simple question:

I have 2x 256mb ram (pc 2700) in my computer from a company called Infineon.

1. Can i put in another 512 mb from a different company?
2. If i can do the above, and I put 1 512mb stick in (so it'd be 2x 256 and 1x 512) with the companies being different?

I've heard that I can't from some, and that i can from others, but i'd like to be sure before i buy.

Depends on how many ram slots there are in your comp. Call your manufacturer and find out. Different companies are ok. Just make sure it will fit, e.g. number of pins.

people are probably referring to dual channel. having the same type of ram to get a small performance increase. your 2x 256mb will run on dual channel if you motherboard supports it and another stick of 512mb will be single channel. You can use a different company.
