RAM Buying Questions

I just have a few questions about RAM. First I was looking at buying Kingmax DDR400 PC3200 512MB RAM but I have found some Corsair ram for a good price. These are all Canadian prices by the way.

TWINX1024-3200 2X512MB PC3200 DDR400 $360
TWINX1024-3700 2x512MB CAS 2 PC3700 DDR433 $415
TWINX1024-4000 2X512MB PC4000 DDR500 $369

I was wondering which of these I should buy, the PC3700 RAM seems to be really expensive. So I wanted to know what the difference between these are and which one would be the best for the price. As far as the PC4000 goes, is there anything that even supports PC4000 and DDR500?

If you are looking for good overclocks, get the RAM, with the best timings.

I personally would choose low latency 3200, over PC4000. You would actually get better results from the LL DDR.
 
Do you know where I could find a good primer to learn more about how RAM works and how to go about buying the appropriate RAM for my system. I have searched google, but most of the stuff I have found has to do with RAM architecture which I do not understand.

Umm... no. Tight timings are good, but generally it's a tradeoff between timings and speed (mhz.) Everything out right now uses PC3200 at stock speed. That's A64s, P4s, whatever.

The only way you take advantage of that faster memory is if you're overclocking your processor's Front Side Bus or FSB. You should be able to find a few threads or websites explaing FSB, multipliers, and all that.

If you could tell us what processor you have, we could tell you what to buy, but that wouldn't get you nearly as far as you learning WHY you should buy it by yourself.

I'm not the best person to ask about A64s, I believe their FSB doesn't really change, so PC3200 is all they can really take advantage of, but wait until someone who's certain gets here.
 
Well thanks a lot, any help is really appreciated. I have figured out all other components of the system except for the RAM so I am looking for as much information as possible. Also if someone has a good primer on memory for the new speeds PC3200 and above I would be very interested to read it. I have been trying to figure out the mystery that is memory for a while now and it's not just about buying RAM but more understanding what I am buying. I just want to further my knowledge in addition to get a good bang for the buck. 😉

Recommend you go with PC3200 CAS 2.5 ram. CAS 3 is to slow and CAS 2.0 can be expensive. Try to run FSB at 200mhz.
