Ram and overclocking...

hi, i use a matched pair of crucial pc2100 256 mb modules in my granite bay MSI GNB MAX 2 - L mobo.. i cannot seem to get past around 160 fsb, so i set it at 150 (i have northwood p4 2.26 (533 fsb)), making CPU speed 2550 mhz...

anyway, it seems my ram is "too slow" for a decent overclock.. would putting 2 pc3500 modules WORK at giving me better overclockability, even though my mobo supports up to pc2100?

also, why does having ram that runs at higher MHZ make you able to overclock more??? because you are still overclocking your memory when you set FSB higher.. i dont quite understand =////

thanks

ok dude
#1 yes Faster ram will give you more overclockability unless you are cup limited.

#2 when you rise fsb by 1 mhz the ram rises to 1mhz ddr2mhz

ya.. but why is my pc2100 less overclocable than faster ram

dude do this go to your bios set the cas on the ram on 3 if it is 2.5 now then set the fsb to a higher speed if that works then you are ram limited i think :")?

If your CPU is the limit, increasing the speed of your CPU will make your system more overclockable.
If your RAM is the limit, increasing the speed of your RAM will make your system more overclockable.

The original poster was talking about a P4, and I assumed that we were talking about a locked multiplier. Correct me if that is an incorrect assumption please.

If that is a correct assumption, it is either the RAM or the CPU or both that limits the FSB.

If it is the CPU that is limiting, you can gradually increase the VCore. That will increase the speed of your CPU and you will be able to overclock more (increase the FSB more).

If it is the RAM that is limiting, you can increase the VDIMM to increase the speed of the RAM, or you can get faster RAM. Then, you can overclock more (increase the FSB).

If it is the CPU that is limiting, you gain nothing by increasing the speed of the RAM. If it is the RAM that is limiting, you gain nothing by increasing the speed of the CPU.

In an optimum system, both the RAM and the CPU will limit at the same maximum FSB spot so that you neither waste CPU nor RAM capability.
In practice, you cannot do that. But, you can get close.

Does that make sense?
