I'm currently building my first system for college and I pretty much have everything planned out except one thing, the ram and mobo. I've been reading many horror stories of ram causing problems with the board. What I would like to know is what is the best ram that works with the DFI NF4 Ultra-D in dual-channel mode. I definately want to overclock all that I can. I plan to do lots of gaming if I have time during college. Also I can't really afford much so if the ram could be less than $180. One last thing, I would want about 1gig of it. The processor I'm planning to use is a socket 939 a64 3200+ winni. If you guys have any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if I sound like a punk for asking so much.

Thanks,
Roy

I've been reading that with an a64, memory doesn't have to have low latency to run good with it. So thats why I posted that one suggestion because it is fast in the speed area but ok in the latency area. Since I wanted to overclock all I figured that I had to do would be to raise the front side bus. Since the memory is ddr500 that shoudn't be much of a problem. Unless of course I'm completely off my rocker. Thanks ionoxx for that suggestion I'm looking at it. Anyone else with suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Roy

I would not have normally gone with something so high such as DDR500 PC4000 but since its so cheap at about $30 more than some Mushkin Value at DDR400 PC3200 I figured why not try. But if its a bad idea I would like to know. Since I really want to try to get my cpu to around 2.5ghz I thought it might be easier since it would be 250x10 at stock voltages on the memory. Or if I had to do some changes it wouldn't be many. But then again I could be completely wrong.

juysocal those links helped some, but at the ocforums one had some good info, but everyone seemed to have gotten tied up into what type of psu they should get. The first page is what seemed to provide the most help. The dfi-street link, everyone was talking about expensive memory that I diffenately could not afford. But if I could of afforded it it would of helped greatly. So thanks for helping its much aprreciated.

I've been reading about people using dividers on slower memory such as value select and I was wondering if I would be able to get to 2.5ghz by using that stuff some how?

Thanks,
Roy

I agree. Get value ram, use a divider, save money.

I've read Zebo's excelent thread before and just want to make sure I understand it. I can get some value ram and use a divider and still be able to hit near 2.5ghz.. Is this right? One thing that puzzles me is how the whole divider thing works. Being able to make good stuff run great just by changing some settings in the bios, just doesn't click all the way. I see that it works I just would like to know why? Thanks for the advice so far guys.

Thanks,
Roy

DDR400= 200 fsb x2 When you use a divider you underclock your ram to a slower speed (lets say DDR333 or 166 fsb x2 for example) wich gives you some room to overclock without running your ram past its rated speed. You just keep using larger dividers as your overclock gets higher. Anyone can correct me if I explained this wrong.

Thanks natethegreat makes somewhat more sense now. I just read that news article on the front page of anandtech here. Just by reading that at least it lets me know that more people are getting to know them. So that brings a new question. Which one should I get, some value ram such as value select, mushkin, etc.... or should I get the Kingmax. I like the the idea of the value stuff because everyone seems to know about it and would be able to lend support if something went wrong. But I also like the Kingmax since it seems to be doing fine and its not much more money for great performance and I wouldn't have to mess with too many settings. So if someone could tell why one's better than the other that would be nice. Thanks so for the great help guys.
