I emailed the ECS guy and he told me that since I have an 2500XP+ processor, I can't use PC2100. Is that true? If so, what's the slowest processor I can still use my PC2100?

Its not true, as long as your board supports the right divider you can run the mem at pc2100 speeds.

thanks, guys. can i mix and match? (i.e., use one 512 stick of PC2100 and 1 512 stick of PC2700?)

Yes you can, there is always the chance they won't play nice together but in general it isn't a issue. The faster ram will downclock to the speed of the 2100 that's all.

Um, you do know that 333 fsb equals PC 2700, right? You can run your CPU FSB and RAM speed asynchronously if you know your way around bios and your motherboard allows it, but it's either PC2700 or overclocking the 2100 (I've seen lots of it run PC 2700 speeds) if you keep them synched. The ECS guy either knows that you can't run asynch or meant that your CPU isn't designed to run optimally with PC2100. BTW, if you're getting new ram, get PC3200 regardless. It's virtually the same price as 2700 and is faster-no brainer.

the amd xps are notorious for hating memory dividers. moving fro natural 333mhz ram to a memory divided 266mhz ram will sap performance a lot more than you expect.
