RAM an Opteron: CAS2 or CAS3?

I am very close to a build with an ASUS A8N SLI Premium, Opteron 170, and 7800GT.

Here are the options I am considering:

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail
CL3 (3,3,3,8)
$193.00

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM System Memory - Retail
CL2.5 (2.5,3,3,6)
$165.00

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail
CL2 (2,3,3,6)
$236.00

OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Platinum System Memory - Retail
CL2 (2,3,2,5)
$239.99

The G.Skill seems like the best deal, but I have really never heard of the brand before. In terms of brands, I like Corsair the best.

I use the listed OCZ ram in my opteron 165 @ 2.52 machine and it works very well. That being said I have heard nothing but good for the G.Skill ram so if I were buying right now I would definitly consider them. Really, as long as it's 2 or 2.5 CL then go with whatever is cheaper between the better brands (OCZ, G.Skill, Corsair, Crucial, Mushkin) and you will be happy.

If you are an extreme overclocker then other issues come into affect but you can get decent overclocks running a mem divider and sticking with lower latency ram.

The purchase has been made. I went with...

CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail
CL2 (2,3,3,6)
$236.00

I have personally used just about every part you have listed here. I just built a system for my girlfriend using an Asus A8N Premium board and OCZ Platinum memory. For my system, I opted for a DFI Motherboard and G.Skill Extreme Memory.

I'm very impressed with the platinums, I have them doing 2-3-2-5 @ 1T with no problem on the asus board. There is little difference between 2T, 2.5T and 3T but I did notice a difference jumping from 2T to 1T.

I'd say if you're going for feature rich stock (asus) instead of overclocking, it is a great option.

OP,
I would go with the Corsair 2-3-3-6 (I just bought mine a week ago)...good company, good warranty, solid reputation. Not sure about the memory ribbon13 was recommending 😕, but then again I have NEVER seen him/her give a consistant recommendation on "the best memory". He/she gave me completely different recommendations a week ago than he/she is giving you now...not sure what the story is behind that one. Just remember, opinions are like @ssholes - everyone has one and most of them stink.😀

Good luck!

Perhaps you mean I give different memory recommendations to people with different needs? Some people want cheap. Some people don't overclock, and others because of this want the tightest timings they can get at stock speeds. So how could my suggestions stay the same? @sshat.

I do believe I've consistantly stated I believe this Mushkin is the 'best DDR' available. But it's clearly not an appropriate reccomendation for the OP, is it?

Oh...the beauty of the net just goes to show how little we actually know of one another😉 LMAO

Everyone knows the OCZ EB Plat. ones are faster 😉
Sure, I paid more for them, and I'm probably getting the same performance considering they use the same CH-5/6 Inferions RAM on it, but YOU don't have the OCZ name!!!!!! 😀

😛

I bought my 2x 1GB Corsair CL2 PC3200 from ZZF for $234.50 with a $40 mail-in rebate, for a total of $194.50. ZZF sells the CL3 version of the same RAM for $192 and the ValueSelect for $168.90.

I think I got a decent deal.

Ran an extra 15 full passes (8hrs) of memtest86 last night just to double check. 🙂

I am also thinking about this RAM for my new A8N - SLI Primium.

What is the differenece between
Twinx2048-3200c2pt
&
Twinx2048-3200c2

The fist one has pt at the end.

How good this overclocks? I am not a mad overclocker, I just want it to run @ 233-250 MHz.
My GeIL value RAM on AN8-Ultra runs fine with 233MHz, so I expect this guys to run more than that.
