Ram (2x256mb) vs. (2x512mb)

Hi,

I'm in the process of building a new PC yada yada yada

I'm looking to get a high end pair of identical sticks PC3200.

And I'd like to know the benefits of going from 512mb total to 1gb total.

The specs will be:

Intel 3.0 CPU
9800NP
ABIT IC7-G
Antec PSU

Programs I'll be using:

XP Pro
Office 2003
BF1942
BF1942 DC
HL2
Sonic Foundry Vegas
Adobe Premiere, Photoshop

I searched the forums but didn't find this discussed. If it was just link me please.

BF1942 loves more memory...especially 1gb or more. A few things in photoshop might go faster, but I wouldn't count on it. Basically if you can afford it, see if you can answer this question: "Why shouldn't I get 1gb of ram?" If you can't answer it, go buy 1gb of ram.

as textures in games become larger and more complex, more memory will be necessary. that's probably people say it isn't essential now, but it might be in the near future. so unless you'll be playing BF1942 and HL2 for the rest of your days, i'm sure there will be some future titles that catch your eye, and 1GB of memory might come in handy then...same w/ photoshop, since you may be editing large textures. but things like MS Word and IE won't load any faster w/ another 512MB of RAM.

Don't know why but more is better. Get 1GB if you can afford it. Premiere should like the extra memory

if you're broke then 512mb won't freeze up your windows for 5 hours and 37 minutes either. buy what you can afford and be aware that hardware prices are constantly dropping
