Now that the grocery strike is over, they sent me a letter thanking me for shopping there during the strike and included coupons for a free gallon of OJ, dozen eggs, sausage links, and english muffins. That's pretty cool.

yeah. after the fires, families and such needed supplies, so ralph's and the unions came to a quick agreement and relocated the picket lines to other stores (albertsons, vons) so people in* need of supplies wouldnt have to deal with the on-strike empoyee's.

I didn't give a fvck about their picket line. (Actually they did picket there for quite a while, only stopping in the last couple months.)

Agreed. When I was in CA, we deliberately searched for a store with picketers (it was a Ralphs in Granada Hills) just so we could walk through their lines.

The funniest thing about this strike was that the stores ran just fine without the overpaid union workers. They should have fired them all and moved on. Frankly, I'm amazed that they didn't.

They wanted to continue the same benefits they'd been recieving previously, correct? IIRC, it was free health care. That's a hell of a nice benefit. I don't know about you, but working for $10/hr. and suddenly having to pay a huge chunk of each hour's pay to cover health care costs that were previously free would pretty much break me if I had a car payment, rent and child care expenses.

I don't know if a strike of that length was necessary and frankly I didn't support it, but I can understand where the employees were coming from. And, out of principle, I don't cross picket lines except in extreme cases. The lecturers at the UM went on a one-day strike on Thursday and I chose to miss class. I never, ever skip class but I supported their cause and I chose to do so by not crossing their picket line.

I think the point was they weren't getting paid $10/hour, but some grossly overpaid amount already ($18-$30/hour?)
