one more, showing the mod I did to fit a 120 mm fan in the bottom 3 of my 5.25" drive bays. it drops temps about 4C on average, but you have to keep case door opened.

it consists of 1x fan filter, Raidmax fan (from the case originally, but was the rear exhaust), cut up air filter from an indoor filtration system and a lot of tape. this mod basically means you don't have to buy a Scythe Kama Bay for $20. I paid $6.99 for two filters and this fan should be valued around $10. since the Raidmax fan is pretty quiet, I can sleep even with two intake fans 120 mm, 80 mm exhaust, 120 mm PSU fan, 120 mm exhaust, Freezer64 Pro and Silencer on at full speed. my airflow is planned out so that the top 120 mm provides air to PSU and Freezer64P while the bottom provides air to HDDs, NB, GPU and is exhausted out by the Silencer and 80 mm on window.

Noticed tape on the outside of the case. Perhaps some well placed double sided tape on the side of the fan would hold it in place while hiding the taped look. Not too sure, maybe some closeups of the fan area along with a couple shots of the inside of the case where the fan is.

Nope, won't work that way. What I can do is use metal wires to keep it in place. Don't know how I would pull it off though.

Well, get some closeup cam shots up. Maybe we can think of something. I'd hate to see a nice looking case mod marred by some scotch tape on the outside.

How much better would the airflow be if I cut the 120mm holes for both the exhaust and bottom intake? My case is also a little louder than before now that I've moved it to the top of my desk. Will rubber mounts for fans make the fans any quieter?

The only way to make it abit quieter is to buy 120mm fans, very quiet fans. Asaka, Nexus, and Yate Loon make amazingly quiet fans. Also the Scythe fans are very quiet.

Already have 120 mm fans, I'm talking about quieting the 120 mm fans (since I have 4 total (2 for intake, 1 for exhaust and another in PSU).

bass, i have no fan controller for intake fans and none would fit either (i have a door in the way). i am also not about to spend 55 USD on a Thermaltake Hardcano 13 (which is just about the only thing flat enough to fit). would Scythe fans make things any quieter?

Er...how should I explain this...I have my 160GB Seagate in the bottom exposed 3.5" bay and it's too thick to have anything above it or it won't fit. That means no 3.5" fan controllers would fit. I'm actually not planning on buying new fans unless I absolutely have to. How well would rubber grommets help the noise?

there's only one cable that goes everywhere...and that would be the power to the 80 mm exhaust. oh well.

Today's project was done due to my bottom hard drive (80GB Maxtor) overheating (41C) and the realization that my bottom 120 mm intake is not delivering as much air as the one in the drive bays. When tested outside of the case, the Raidmax actually blew more air than the Cooler Master (which I already hypothesized). Without further ado, here begins my journey to cut out the fan meshes both in the rear exhaust and front intake as well as change the mesh on the 80 mm exhaust to be a simple grill.

First thing: Wear safety goggles at all times when snapping metal off and cutting it apart: http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/8938/10000796gm.jpg
Front bezel removed: http://img307.imageshack.us/img307/4015/10000864wv.jpg
Running mobo on tray on desk (as you can see, I've disregarded cabling as an issue): http://img307.imageshack.us/img307/8370/10000767nt.jpg
Case torn up: http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/6030/10000825ml.jpg
Case with top removed: http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/7391/10000836vt.jpg
Key ingredients (three 120 mm fans, double CM Silent LED Blue and one Raidmax Super Silence 120 mm): http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/5158/10000870tj.jpg
Quick installation of 80mm fan grill, previous on bottom: http://img487.imageshack.us/img487/5344/10000800zm.jpg
Closer shot of fan grill provided by 996GT2 on my 80mm Silent LED: http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/2874/10000819om.jpg
Mesh removed from rear 120 mm using wire cutters: http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/4154/10000771sn.jpg
Drive bay 120 mm mod from previous project, fixed up tape after this picture: http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/9306/10000931cq.jpg

Tin snips used after enlarging two holes in mesh and connecting those two using wire cutters: http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/8010/10000920hf.jpg
Fan grills installed onto bottom front intake with Raidmax fan: http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/5350/10000910rn.jpg

Oh and a pic of me taking damage from installing the last Maxtor hard drive (the one that was overheating): http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/1247/10000944uq.jpg

Sorry for loads of pics but I just gotta share :p Oh yeah, CPU loads dropped to 33C from 35C while Folding after 1 hour.

Very nice, you ended up doing it before me :p. Do you think only replacing the 80mm fan grill would do much? Was your system quieter after this mod? So you replaced the side and rear grills...and the lower drive bay front one?
Thanks

The wooshing of air was elmininated so it is slightly quieter. Only replacing the 80mm fan grill won't do much because it's not the one that moves the most air. I removed every single mesh I could possibly remove and replaced them with the grills that restricted the least airflow. Overall, I think the case looks cleaner as well (most noticeable on side window).

Still working on getting all my parts together. Rally, I changed my mind on the Raidmax X1 case and decided to go with a Thermaltake Swing unit. Plans so far call for the Tt120mm fans front low and rear, and I wanted to buy a Kama Bay 120mm for front intake high but don't think the case will properly mount the Scythe unit due to its mounting rail system ... I would have to drill some holes to mount it properly. Regadless, three 120's and a 120 HSF should keep the air flowing. Nice job with your case ... keep the updates coming !

I heard those Tt 120 mm fans are pretty loud (t3h l337 n3wb has a Tsunami which I'm pretty sure uses the same fans as the Swing), so you might end up replacing it. Oh yes, the 120 mm on the Kama Bay is only 800 RPM so I think you should switch it out for a S-Flex 1200 RPM.
