Have you heard that the MTA wants to ban photography? It's a load of crap, that's what it is, and we have to help make sure it never happens. If you are a photographer, or just care about us not giving in to the terrorists, then won't you consider coming to a rally against the proposed New York City subway PHOTO BAN. It will take place this Sunday, starting at the info booth at Grand Central Terminal in New York City at 1:00 PM. From there the rally will move into the subway, where if you got a camera, USE IT! It should be a fun time for all, young and old. It should make the papers on Monday, seriously. For more information, go to the following link:

http://photographersrights.mtude.com/index.php

I hope some of you can come out and show your support. Thanks.

Although I do dislike giving up rights, and I do agree that photography should not be banned I think ...

This will be a peaceful demonstration against the MTA's proposed Photography Ban, conducted in the spirit of Rosa Parks. We will simply ride through Manhattan with our cameras, taking as many photographs as we please, of whatever we please. To ban photography in the subway system is as absurd as telling African Americans that they must ride at the back of the bus. Read the FAQ page for a lis of further points on why this proposed ban is, to state it simply, an incredibly dumb idea.

Is a little absurd.

Yeah, what the rally organizer wrote on that page IS weird. I'm not really sure why he wrote that. I think he just got a little too enthusiastic or something. But disregarding that weird text, this is a worthy event to attend and a worthy issue to address.

The MTA is doing it for "security" reasons, as they say. But we all know that argument is bull because you don't need to take a photo of a subway station or train before, heaven forbid, bringing a bomb down there and detonating it. And on top of that, there are already ten of thousands of photos of the subway system in books and on the internet. Are they going to force all those website to shut down? Are they going to stop selling the books in the Transit Museum Store that have photos of the subway? It is ridiculous.

Sooo... are they also planning on banning tourists with video cameras? What about the press and/or movie/tv companies? Couldn't a terrorist get his information from an NYPD Blue segment too?

OMG
They'd better take this map off the internet. Someone might figure out where a particular station is!

If you think it's bull, what is the real reason then ? Why would they go to this trouble ?

I can see their viewpoint... people can take pictures of specific sections areas and that can aid in planning. What you find on the Internet is not site/location specific and may be outdated. Just playing devil's advocate. I don't really care either way. I'm not a photographer who may need to do it in the future for business/art reasons. THe banning would actually be a good thing rather than bad the way I see it.

I agree with rh71 on this one. But I?m not a professional photographer either. I?ve never felt the need to take any photographs on the subway.

Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not
have, nor do they deserve, either one. -- President Thomas Jefferson(1743-1826).

Do you really this action will prevent that information from getting out? How small are camera's these days? Oh wait cell phones, SNAP! Now, are they are going to ban phones too? What about microdevices? Couldn't I just hide a camera and get the same info?

Security=good.
Stoopid acts in the name of security, that provide NO security=bad.

What's next, blindfolds for subway goers? I can see things, I can remember, I don't need a photo to get that info...

Lol, that's a GREAT idea! And then they can take down all the subway maps at each station, and all the station names, and cover all the windows on every car, and never announce the station...

I'll tell you, those terrorists won't know HOW to strike! :p
