Raising the volume of an MP3

How do I raise the volume of an MP3 file? Right now I have a song that's really quiet so I have to turn my speakers up to hear it, but when I turn them up everything else becomes way too loud and my instant messenger scares me sometimes.

I use a program called goldwave but there is probably an easier way if you don't have it installed .. if you do use goldwave you will need an mp3 codec also

Or you could just disable your AIM sounds.

Would Goldwave do it? Or maybe convert it to .WAV, normalize the audio and reconvert to MP3? I usually just use MusicMatch Jukebox to rip CDs and then use Nero to put together my own mix of songs and let Nero normalize the tracks on the CD.

But, if it's at a low record level, you may wind up with distortion if you try to get it louder.

There are many programs that will equalize volume among many MP3's. Unfortantly, I can't think of the easiest ones to use. Cool Edit Pro will do it, and just about everything else, but look for something simpler.

go buy the cd and stop stealing music 😛

I would if I knew where. It's not actually a song, it's an orchestral piece named "Movement for Rosa", written in memory of Rosa Parks.

From a google.com search of "movement for rosa" CD:

Ugh, I hate that piece. What on earth is compelling you to listen to it?

lol, I don't want to order it online because shipping would cost more than the CD, and if I bought it from there, the money wouldn't go to the composer. It would go to that university band. Besides, you don't know that it's illegal to download that specific recording. It could be free.

The high school band I'm in is playing that this year, and I think it's not a bad piece. Not too great, but I kinda like it. Wow, I just realized that we play a lot of supposedly university level pieces.
