Quick rundown: Vid card Radeon VE 64mb 1.7ghz P4 256 RD ram.

FPS in CounterStrike at 1024x768 gets down to about 10-15 FPS in intense scenes. Unacceptable. It used to be better, not sure what changed. Possibly I installed the latest video drivers (gateway made me for another issue completely... dont ask, search for my thread in general hardware to see the horror). Would the newer video drivers cause a decrease in performance, or is there something Im missing?

Also does anyone know any tricks/tips to improve my performance a bit?

All you can do is test or search for tests comparing the drivers. I'm fairly sure [meaning I've only tested with 3dmark01 &03] the newest nVidian drivers give me lower fps on my gf3. It could be that my card's no longer on the "optimize me" list. Or it could mean that they set the default detail a bit higher, effectively lowering the fps.

I tend to think the detail settings are just higher than the older drivers because the newer hardware can handle it. That's just a guess. I haven't gone to the trouble to see what changes have happened in the many generations of drivers.

CS 1.6 does seem more resource intensive than 1.5.

In 1.6, type "cl_weather 0" to turn off the rain on maps like de_aztec

Are you using D3D or OpenGL?

OpenGL and cs1.5

Is there anyone I can find out what drivers I previously had installed, and then re-install them?
