Raise my Windows7 Performance Video Speed

I have a Windows 7 machine and the Windows performance overall is a 5.0.

Here are my scores:

Processor = 7.4

Memory = 7.4

Graphics = 5.0

Gaming = 6.2

Primary HD = 7.1

Windows takes the lowest score as your average.

I current have an ATI Radeon HD5450 as my video card. What card would get my score up into the 7's?

Just trying to get your Windows Experience Index up higher is pointless. If you actually NEED a better graphics card (for gaming, for example), you should upgrade to a gaming-level card.

An HD 5670, 5750, 5770, 6850, 6870, GTX 460 1GB, GTX 560 Ti, etc. would all be improvements. It highly depends on the rest of your system (especially the power supply) as to whether or not they'd be any real benefit.

Basically, what CurseTheSky said. Unless you actually need a better video card, don't bother wasting your money just for the sake of raising your WEI score.

Is this a new form of e-peen?
Yes:

The Windows Experience Index is a scale from 1-8. Inches.

Because the composite score is limited by your lowest score and not an average, it unfairly nitpicks your imperfections while ignoring your overall worth. Like a girlfriend.

WEI is handy to show you the low spot in your computer. Unless its a false score.
A ATI 4770 with 640 sp's scores 7.1 in both graphics test in windows 7 on my htpc.
So go for a 5770 (800sp's) if you want/need the gaming power.

Funniest post i've read all day, and painfully true!

LMAO amazing, thanks for that one 🙂

If you have below 4GB of memory in Win7 (maybe only 64bit) the highest score will be 5.9 in WEI. My bios reserves 128 MB of memory so even though I have 4GB it's always scores 5.9. My e-peen is not strong.

Basically, the windows index score is to get ignorant people to buy hardware they don't need.
Seriously lol, its not. It does not ever recommend hardware upgrades. Basically I disagree with labeling curious people who wonder about the results and the scores as ignorant.

What is the Windows Experience Index?

The Windows Experience Index measures the capability of your computer's hardware and software configuration and expresses this measurement as a number called a base score. A higher base score generally means that your computer will perform better and faster than a computer with a lower base score, especially when performing more advanced and resource-intensive tasks.
Each hardware component receives an individual subscore. Your computer's base score is determined by the lowest subscore. For example, if the lowest subscore of an individual hardware component is 2.6, then the base score is 2.6. The base score is not an average of the combined subscores. However, the subscores can give you a view of how the components that are most important to you will perform, and can help you decide which components to upgrade.
You can use the base score to buy programs and other software that are matched to your computer's base score. For example, if your computer has a base score of 3.3, then you can buy any software designed for this version of Windows that requires a computer with a base score of 3 or lower.
The scores currently range from 1.0 to 7.9. The Windows Experience Index is designed to accommodate advances in computer technology. As hardware speed and performance improve, higher score ranges will be enabled. The standards for each level of the index generally stay the same. However, in some cases, new tests might be developed that can result in lower scores.

Guess I'll join the crowd and say too true.

It doesn't directly recommend upgrades, but the verbiage used is highly suggestive.

"However, the subscores can give you a view of how the components that are most important to you will perform, and can help you decide which components to upgrade."

"If a particular program or Windows 7 experience requires a higher score than your base score, you can upgrade your hardware to meet the necessary base score."

"If your base score isn't sufficient for a program or Windows 7 experience, you can use the subscores to figure out which components you need to upgrade."

However for the people that actually read the full description, it does state what each subscore means and how having a better score would increase the performance of the tasks generalized in each category. Though it's not very specific and at the same time overly convoluted to be of any real help to the average Joe. It can be helpful, but like many things Microsoft it's more of a template for something better than a useful tool.

By the score of 5, looks like you have a weaker cheaper card !

Like the above peeps said. Grab a 460 1GB for 120 or 140 dollars if you wanna go red then 5770 or 6850

Grab a 460 1GB call it a day. Only 140 avg , culd be much less or more... but ya that is best bang for buck and it will fit with your CPU well... Then your video card score in WEI will be 7.something

Which PCB color would you suggest for the 460?

Wow, nerds... every single one of you, absolutely, positively, 100%, nerds.

So, WEI is the girlfriend, UAC is the over-protective dad, BSOD is a toddler going through their terrible 2s.

Hi, I'm kiaman, this is my dad UAC, my girlfriend WEI and my toddler brother BSOD.

Well yeah pretty much except really WEI is more akin to a wife for those of us who are or have been married.

I should upgrade to SSD one of these days.
