Raining and no headlights

I was driving today on the highway, and it was raining the whole time, yet I'd say only 2/3 of the cars had their lights on. It was pretty dark outside, and foggy, and sometimes on the highway when it came down hard, some cars w/o lights were practically invisible, no kidding.

Do people not THINK to put their lights on? It's unbelievable and kind of made me mad. I think all cars should be made with lights that automatically come on when engine starts (though I know many cars do that now, not sure the percentage)

I for one, always drive with them on, regardless of weather. Lights last forever, are cheap to replace, and it may just save me one day from a crash or something (can only help I figure to have them on)

No they don't.

And tell that second part to people with HID's.

It's better than all the gay xenon head lamps on cars the wannabes are driving. No, I'm not talking about rice mobiles, I'm talking about all the retarded Acuras.

Where are you getting this info from? If this is the case it has to be a very small amount.

Yes, it's a very small amount. :p I was mostly joking, but the energy to run those bulbs comes from somewhere (unless car headlights are a perpetual motion machine running within a car.)

it's against the law here in PA to not have your lights on when it's raining. i see tons of people still not do it though.

I don't think many people realise that lights are there to help others see you aswell as for you to see the road.. They figure that because they can see the road infront of them they don't need lights.. Assholes!

It's law in some states, but not all... I think it was passed only a few years ago here in NY. A lot of people either don't know, don't care, or, most likely, are just plain oblivious. Come on, you're talking about "the average driver" - nobody assumes they're all bright.

Don't think so. My understanding is that modern cars produce an excess of electricity.

And before someone asks about air conditioning - the compressor consumes more than this excess provides, so AC, specifically, does sap more power.

I don't know about the law, but I think it's pretty obvious the safe thing to do while it's raining, foggy, snowy or (DUH!) dark outside is to turn your headlights on so you're able to see better and also so you're more visible to other drivers. It gets me how people around here drive around in snowstorms where visibility is extremely limited without their headlights on. It's like they're just asking to get into an accident.

To change the subject almost completely, we're having some sort of bear invasion up here in NY. One ran across the road in front of the car this afternoon:Q Maybe one of those a-holes who doesn't use their lights when they're supposed to will hit the poor guy one of these days.
