Rain on motherboard

Hello everyone,

I did a very stupid thing and left my window open and when I left it rained. Some water got into my PC and now it does not work. The power supply turns on and the power LED stays lit up, but the monitor remains black. Pressing the power button for 10 seconds does not work, and neither does the reset button.

I think my motherboard is dead. But I believe (hope) that all of the other components in the system are fine. It's an Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard. You can look at my system specs since I put them in my profile.

My question to you all is: What would be a good motherboard replacement that is compatible with my CPU and memory? My budget is limited. I'd like to pay around $100 but no more than $150. I'm not interested in overclocking, RAID, or any of those features.

Would my memory and CPU support a motherboard with the P45 chipset and ICH10 southbridge?

You look to have the same RAM as I do, I think. DDR2? I just got the mobo in my sig for 115 from NE. It does come with a $15 rebate but I'm not sure if it's still ongoing. Of course, that's if it's just your mobo. You might want to invest in a power supply tester to make sure it's not the PS. Or take it to a friends house and test it.

If at all possible, the best thing you can do before dropping money is find someone (a friend?) who has a system you can possibly test your components on. Ideally you could test each one and that way determine what got fried. It would suck if you got a motherboard and the system still didn't work.

Good suggestion.

OP take everything apart and let all components dry out for a few hours (or a day). It may just be a little water in there stopping contact. I'd give that a try before I dropped any $$ for new components. I've done this with a cell phone and it worked.

It's worth letting everything dry out well before you go on purchasing a new motherboard. It's also worth testing other components.

Anyway, any motherboard on the P43 or P45 chipset will support your components; go with a reputable manufacturer to make sure that you can set your memory timings correctly and overclock (if that's your thing.) The least expensive p45 boards from Asus and Gigabyte are about $100 right now from Newegg.

It's an ASUS P5Q SE PLUS LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard. Its the only one listed on newegg that has a P45 chipset and supports a 1066 FSB.

Do you think my RAM could support FSB of 1333? Because there are a lot more motherboards running 1333Mhz.

Your memory is PC2-6400...
Of course it would support a 1333MHz FSB CPU.

Yeah, DDR2-800 like you have can support up to a 1600FSB (as rated on the motherboard) before it goes above spec

Ok good news. Thanks for clearing that up. By the way, I'm glad that back in 2007 I bought components that would be upgradeable in the future.

Edit: Oh, and I'm assuming my E6600 Conroe will be fine with the P45 chipset?
