Railcar of Ammonia explodes in Texas...

Uhg. Ammonia is bad. Very bad. Had some factory here in Iowa spring an Ammonia leak next to a stream. Anything and everything in that stream was dead for 25 miles downstream.

Bad stuff.

Amazing that no one was killed in the deal.

no kiddin' vi_.

You know how it is in the farmbelt. We are literally surrounded by anhydrous ammonia tanks. We train for catastrophes all the time on the fire department.

On a lighter note, the pukes running the meth labs in the country are stealing the stuff right and left from the fertilizer plants. Some are getting good and f'd up in the process. The FS plant up the road just discovered the other day that someone had tried to drill into a 10,000 gallon ammonia tank with a hand drill. Like they were going to catch it in a cup or something. They almost got thru but the bit broke. Thats how they noticed. Bit was hanging out of the bottom of the tank.

The evacuation radius for a spill at that plant is 7 miles for a major leak.

I had a friend who worked at a chemical plant in that area.

He says that in the plants, there are "safe rooms" inside. These rooms are fed by positive pressure air supplies that pump fresh air into the safe room at a higher pressure than ambient, so no checmicals can leak into the safe room.

Basically, in an emergency, everyone is supposed to hole up in the safe rooms until the crisis is cleaned up.

(I hope they have a magazine rack in there.)

Testiment to the shear lack of intelligence of these idiots. The 4 quarts of oil in my oil pan can shoot the oil a good 4 foot or so if I don't catch it. 10,000 gallons would probably blast the drill right through you.

Iowa's got the largest amount of meth labs in the nation. They are nothing more than a ticking time bomb waiting to go off.

Not seeing anything on CNN about this yet...I wonder if they're holding off because of the other I-75 thing going on.

Speaking of that, my former college roommate told me about the meth lab that blew up on his street a few years ago. He was home for the summer, and one morning he heard a big boom which woke him up. A house down the street about 5-6 houses away was obliterated, causing damage to surrounding houses. The police said alter that they found evidence of a meth lab in the basement, or what was left of it. Perry, Iowa, just north of Des Moines.

Ammonia isn't the only thing you will find. Those meth cookers will use anything that they think will work. Especially the Beavis and Butthead labs.
