RAID5 with my settings just died....but Im still up

I have a Windows installation that my user is pointed to a D : drive (a RAID5) which basically has documents, settings, etc. for my user......... It just died and the D : disappeared. Do not worry, I have a backup copy.

The strange thing is that my Windows is still up and running and everything is still on the desktop (the desktop is also on the RAID5).

Messages have been popping up such as "error opening log file" so Im not opening too much programs for now.

My question is basically, how is Windows still up and not BSOD?

I made another admin user just in case I restart, I boot up, and it starts throwing error messages. I would just change the letter to the backup drive and thats it.

I guess errors aren't occurring there (yet), but only in the partition where the documents are.

IMO, check if the drives are healthy (getting to: it a software problem, the drive controller, or the HDDs?), and go from there. If they aren't, and a single drive can fit everything, RAID 1, else RAID 10 (if nothing else, either of these would save your time during future problems). If they are, try restoring to a freshly formatted partition.

Windows boots off the C drive. Some or all of the icons on your desktop are either on the C drive (shortcuts) or they're cached. It's still running because all the important stuff is still where it expects it to be. (C:\...)

Everything on my desktop is on my D : I set it that way. That's why its weird that it is still up. Obviously, I tried to open a picture on the Desktop and it did not open.

I imagine it is a drive problem, hardware wise. Everything now is on a WD RED 3TB and Im working off that. Im buying a WD RED PRO 3TB in a couple of days to get the full storage working again.
