RAID1 without a format?

So i want to buy a 2nd 2TB when prices drop. But im concerned that if I try to set up a RAID1 array that it will format my origonal drive. I have nowhere else to temporarily store my files if i do this. So would i have to format to make a RAID1 array? It doesnt make sense that I should but who knows.
