Raid?!

Excactly how much help would raid have on my system? nothing at all?
I'm gonna buy 1 100gb hd.

another q i want answered is this. I'm buying the MSI mainboard. the stupid people runs an AMI bios, could that be why the speed is so poor.
Anyone know if the USB 2.0 on the MSI is any good, I don't think I will have any use for it.
I would have gone for an EpoX because of it being faster, having award bios and actually is quite cheap. The only problem is that think i want raid 🙂

It's a dilemma.

If you only have 1 hard drive, then RAID will be useless for you except to get the hard drive off of the main IDEs so you can have four other devices there. If you have two or more hard drives than RAID can provide increased hard drive performance and/or data redundancy. If you have two hard drives of unequal size or speed, then RAID is not a good idea either. Only pay more for the MSI mobo if you need the RAID. Otherwise, get the Epox.

I have the MSI K7T266 Pro2 RU and I couldn't be happier. I personally got the raid board for expandabilty. You would want to go with 2 equal sized HDs to take advantage of the raid. You should feel a performance difference though. The AMI bios isn't bad. It has all the same features as the Award bios, but they have a little different placement. Actually the AMI bios boots up faster than the Award. I haven't used the USB 2.0 ports, but i will have them there for the future. If you have a device that takes advantage of USB 2.0 then you should see a big speed difference. Also remember that for a external USB card it costs $50 right now, so you're actually getting a deal. I haven't had any stability or compatibility problems.

jcmkk: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but according to what I've read, you can not use the raid controller on that board for 'normal' IDE/ATAPI expandability.

I didn't mean it that way. I knew that before I bought it. I just figure if I ever want raid, then all I have to do is slap in another 40GB HD.
