RAID worth it for games?

Simple question, would RAID 0 with 2 1TB 7200rpm drives be noticeably faster than a single 2TB drive for gaming?

Asking because my current 1TB games drive is almost full, so i could buy a 2TB drive to replace it or buy another 1TB and raid them. I already have a WD green 2TB 5400rpm drive i would use to backup either option. I Have the Intel ICH10R controller to handle the RAID.

In theory you'll get double the speeds, but there's too many other factors so it doesn't usually work out like that. And on top of that you double your risk for data loss. RAID0 is almost never a good idea...

Dont really care about data loss, it will be backed up weekly. When dealing with consumer level drives its a good idea to backup everything, raid or not, IMO.

I ran raid 0 without issues, the speed increase wasn't huge, but there was one. My setup was two 500gb seagate 7200.12's and an Intel ICHR-10, windows 7

I have 2 500 GB 7200rpm drives in RAID0. Loading maps in games seems slightly faster than with a single drive, usually by a few seconds.

You will probably never see the 2X speed seen benchmark since that only applies to very large sequential files. Most of the files in programs and games will be relatively small.

It's up to you to determine if a few seconds gain is worth it.

how many games do you play?

Dont ask 🙂 my steam folder is just under 600GB, and i have about 100GB in non steam games.

Im going to go for it, buying a second 1TB drive to go raid would be cheaper than buying a 2TB as a replacement anyways 🙂

They install faster.
They load faster.

Maps load faster.

Beyond that, not really.

So, if you need those 2 seconds to spawn before every one else does, go for it.

Or just get SSD.

fwiw, w/ my setup i'm always the 1st or 2nd spawned in FFOW -- therefore; it's worth it to me esp. since 1TB drives are so cheap now! 🙂

i ran raid:0 for a long time with two 7200 ATA166 drives, actually ran it with 3 drives once for shits and giggles... not much of a gamer but it made a noticeable difference in load time for EVERYTHING. windows was snappier...

Yep, same here, very similar setup. I do keep it cleaned up and imaged. the performance difference is noticeable, esp. when booting

I did 3 SSDs in RAID-0. It's okay, not really that great of a difference. It would probably help if you RAID HDDs, but I would make sure backups are happening regularly.
