Raid vs single hd

I'd not do it for gaming. You can get 3 velociraptors for the price...

If you mean RAID0 then it might help load times, but that's about it. If you mean another level like 1,5 or 6 then no it probably won't help a whole lot.

Um.. price of what?

3 Velociraptors cost $900

Any two hard drives cost must less than $900 and nearly any new board has onboard raid controllers.

I'd recommend a single 640GB Western Digital. It has pretty good performance and it's only around $100

I love using RAID0 for my boot. It's fast fast fast. Generally the speed will scale with the number of drives in the RAID set (as does the risk). Back it up regularly and you should be ok.

I wouldn't go for RAID 5 becuase of the performance penalty and Mirroring is just for protection, no speed.
