Greetings,

I'm looking at setting up the Abit IC7-G. The board offers both ICH5 RAID 0 and an additional RAID function (0/1) via the Silicon Image PCI Chip

Is there any reason I couldn't install two seperate RAID arrays, one on each controller?

TIA

I haven't used this board so take my answer with a grain of salt.

I don't see why not. They'll show up as two separate controllers in the OS I would think. You might have to pay a bit of attention to make sure the right array is acting as the boot device.

Raid 0 for OS, Pagefile & Quake - everything else on a Raid 1?

just because it's there ? or have you looked at what you need from your comp ?
2 arrays = 4 drives x ($$ x power supply) + cooling

GO FOR IT!!

Well, initially, yes. :)
Your point is very well taken, however. I think I'm coming around to the idea of a single Raptor for OS and applications and 2@120gb SATA drives in RAID 1 for storage. At least for this moment...

That's what pops up the other moment.

Hey, not a problem--your point is a good one, often overlooked in the rush to have the next big thing. And thanks! Its a great forum, I was up till 0300 reading this am...

You can do it just fine, I currently have a Gigabyte 8KNXP. It has the ICH5 controller, then a SI SATA raid controller, and then a gigaraid controller (in addition to the regular IDE controllers).

I have a Raptor drive hooked up to the ICH5 controller (soon to be raided when I get the second raptor), then I have two SATA (seagate) 80GB drives hooked up to the SI SATA raid controller, then 2 drives (WD 120GB) hooked up to the gigaraid controller (Raid 0). That's 5 drives (soon to be 6), two times Raid 0 (soon to be 3).....

that deserves a power supply recomendation..
