My computer is below in my profile. My motherboard supports raid. Can I add two additional hard drives and run them in raid 1 for a safety backup of files without reinstalling Windows? Thanks!!!

If you have two spare SATA ports on the same controller you can do what you want without reinstalling windows. You neglected to list your motherboard in your profile, which are you using?

I have a DFI Ultra-D 939 socket motherboard. I believe i have a total of 4 SATA ports. I could buy another 320gb hard drive then i would have one SATA for each of the 320gb hard drives. Although I hate to buy a hard drive of that size again. I should probably buy 2 500gb hard drives. I just want the best solution to back up pictures. I had thought about using an old computer to run Windows Home Server. I have heard stories about dvds and cds that are several years old that no longer work. Thanks!!!

Then, that would mean getting it out of your machine away from screw-ups. Ever heard of an external drive? ;)

I have an external hard drive. I just like the idea of the data being on more than one hard drive. Hard drives fail but the likelyhood of two failing at the same time is small. I have over 6000 pictures of my kids that I do not want to lose. I agree that the best thing is to get it out of the current computer. Maybe Windows Home Server would be a good thing to look at. Then I can give access to my parents so they can get pictures off of the server too.

You don't need Server OS.

Just set up an FTP server with read only access for them to download stuff.

Buy 2x500 G drives and make RAID 1. *you will only have 500gb for your pictures*

but also record DVDs and move to external drives from time to time!

RAID 1 is not a backup solution, it is just to keep your files in case one drive dies!
