I took a look at the AT FAQ on raid but that just gave a basic over view of the different levels of RAID.

I have a new Maxtor 40GB hdd about to come in and I want to use it in RAID 0 in the future. Do I need another MAXTOR drive or can I use any 40GB 7200rpm 2mb cache hdd.... IBM or WD for example?

Either should work just fine, however, any performance hit over using a matched pair would be anyone's guess unless you tested the difference yourself. I don't think you'll find many reviews on RAID 0 performance with unmatched drives. If you're going RAID 0, I'd also stay away from the IBM 75GXPs, as there'll be a much lower MTBF based on historical DeathStar implosion rates.

If you're gonna go through the trouble of going RAID 0 you might as well use matched drives... i have 3 quantums in an array... which have outlived hundreds of deathstars... :D... but honestly... i'm a casual user and gamer... and i don't notice any difference... i just went with it for the pimp look through the window... :D

if you mis-match, you will run as fast as the slowest HDD is. i would recommend getting matched HDDs, but how large the difference truly is, i couldn't say what it would be. paired is recommended, anything else, no way to tell to be honest, but its not something i think people would recommned NOT doing. :) mismatched will work, how well depends.

Just get two of the same. Those 40GB drives can be had for what? $40 each now?
