Raid question...Please help

Okay, i'm pretty new to the whole RAID idea. Just finished reading the Raid article on anandtech and have a few questions. First of all, Is there a noticeable difference in speed between a hardware raid and a software raid? Second, would it make more sense to shell out $120 on a new motherboard with raid support or a single raid controller card of the same price? If the answer is mother, can you recommend me which is the best right now...thanks you
