RAID performance and general questions

I'm about to buy a mobo to go with an Athlon 1 Gig T-bird. Got it pretty much narrowed down to the Abit KT7 RAID or the Asus A7V. Is there a huge performance increase with RAID? And can you stripe and mirror (0+1)? Does that eat up hdd space to do both? I've seen people just striping which just adds the performance increase, but no fault-tolerance which is where the mirroring comes in. What's the disadvantage of doing both?

Well, if you mirror disks it is a one for one proposal.

So, if you have 3 striped drives (20GB for a total of 60GB), then you must have 3 more 20GB drives to mirror them. The effective amount of space is still 60GB.

Now, if you had the option for Raid 5, then you would only lose one drive out of a 3+ drive scenario (ie. 3 20GB drives results in 40GB usable, 5 20GB drives resultes in 80GB usable), and still have fault tolerance.
