Raid on Epox 8k5A2+

Hey, I have a Epox 8K5A2+, and i was thinking about getting the 30GB maxtor for $20 from the hot deals forum.

I have a 30 GB 7200 rpm Maxtor already and i figured not why make a RAID and get some better HD speed. What do you guys think beore i go and take the plunge?

I was gonna do the exact same thing but the reality is that a single drive with an 8mb cache will be faster than the two 30's or any other size with the 2mb cache.

My "smallest" array was 2 40 gig Maxtor 7200RPM drives. Write performance topped out around 50MBps. Thats probably 15-20MB faster than my 8mb cache 120gig drives. Okay for 5+ gig file transfers, but zero performance gain in programs/games. But, RAID is one of those things where if you have to ask, you probably don't need it 🙂

Hey now, dont start that! I was actually more concerned about opinions on my board's built in RAID

RAID is not all about max performance ..mirroring is a good thing ...1 drive dies 🙁..you don't lose it all 😉

I have that board and am running RAID0 on it. I have 2 WD 80meg w/ 8meg cache. Very nice, and noticeably faster than a single drive (I've run it both ways). Now would 2 2meg drives in a RAID0 be faster than a single 8meg drive? Good question, but I don't know the answer. Seems to me it might depend not only on the cache size, but the platter density and other spec's of the HD's used. It would be an interesting experiment.
