i have .. say 8x500, and i've now added 6 drives in and migrated the array up. now the array is bigger, and in the manager, i see the original GPT partition, and an unformatted one. how do i add them both without losing data on the original partition? Thanks

Your RAID controller or the management software usually would be used to tell it to rebuild the array, by parting the data out to include the new drives, assuming you are using something other than RAID0, I believe. The manual for the controller should tell you.

If you're using Windows RAID, there's got to be instructions on MS's site.

Thats the problem with understanding raid..

You expanded the RAID container size.. many controller can not expand the windows primary/active partition.. which case you need to use something like parition magic..

but before using such tool, you should back up as there are numerous nightmares..

What I done in the past was ghost the entire array out, add and expand the raid container.. ghost back the image to the full partition..

with your array size 8x500.. that be pretty hard..
