raid help

As I recall, Raid 1 is the mirroring... I want to buy 2 Seagte ST31000340AS 1 terabyte drives, and mirror them. I'd like to set them up in my old shuttle sn41g2 machine, but I'll need a PCI Raid card.

I'm considering the Promise FastTrak TX4310, but they've not tested using this drive.

The shuttle only holds 2 drives, so I need to boot off the raid.

Any suggestions on pitfalls I should consider? I've not done raid before. I am committed to Seagate drives exclusively, due to the warranty they offer. Any other cards I should consider? 20+ years of computer building experience here, just never done raid before.

Thanks.

What motherboard are you going to be using? You might be able to use the motherboard onboard RAID controller for doing RAID 1. Also, keep in mind that you will need to either slipstream SP2 into XP install CD or use a XP SP2 install CD to avoid 32-bit LBA issues.

I had planned on using my old Shuttle SN41G2v3. I would have to dig out the book to see if it supports RAID, but I'm pretty sure it's only SATA150.

Or, I might use an Asus A7N8X-E, which is a few years old. It does RAID, but is only SATA150.

So I was thinking of just getting a Promise Fastrak 4310TX.

Am I going to see real performace boosts by going with SATA2 over the SATA150?

I do have a SP2 CD, so I shouldn't have any problems there... I think I already have another copy I slipstreamed too...

Thank you.

If you're running Linux, you don't need an actual hardware card to do a mirrored RAID array. you can use mdadm to build a software array.

If you're not.. then i've no clue. If you know how to run software RAID0 in vista, Please, let me know!
