I installed 2 HDs for RAID (same model) and a Promise Fastrack ATA100 TX2 on my Windows98SE system (see sig for specs). Now, the RAID BIOS says the RAID is working fine and the Promise software in Windows says the same thing.

BUT, when I tried to run fdisk after the prompt when it asks you about large disk support it would just hang and my HD light would go on.

I tried updating fdisk, etc... but it kept doing the same thing

Then I tried partition magic, it would at least see the unpartition HD and let me START to partition it. BUT it would stop making progress at 18%. After I closed it when it was stuck at 18% and rebooted all of a sudden the drive was viewable in WINDOWs. So I right clicked on it and said format it to it's full capacity (2x80 gig, so 160 gigs). It took a little while but Windows formatted it fine. Now, it shows up formatted in Windows, I can scandisk it from DOS fine (Windows version says I don't have enough memory) and even partition magic says the whole 160 gigs is partition to FAT32 correctly.

I have moved some DivX movies to it, they play fine..

I benched it in Sandra and scored 28,000 which seems about right for 2x5400 HDs as well.

Question is, I don't think it should be working. I mean, I never did what I think I should have had to do for it to be working properly (ie properly partition it). BUT it is.

Would you guys just take this as a blessing and use the drive, or is there some other stuff I should try?

Thanks!

Is the drive an IBM? If so, go to their website and d/l "Drive Fitness Test" and run it. I had a simular problem and it was a bad hdd.
